A little history about Hitchin

Hitchin was first noted as the central place of the Hicce people mentioned in a 7th-century document, the Tribal Hidage. This document lists all the kingdoms in England south of the River Humber. At this time, many of them were small and that of the Hicce was among the very smallest, with only about 300 families due to pay tax. Hicce is not an Anglo-Saxon name as it only makes sense as a Celtic word, sicco, meaning dry, probably a reference to the River Hiz. The river Hiz is properly pronounced as Hitch, as it takes its name from the Hicca tribe who inhabited the area and gave their name to Hitchin.

It has been suggested that Hitchin was the location of Clofesho. The Councils of Clovesho or Clofesho were a series of synods attended by Anglo-Saxon kings, bishops, abbots and nobles in the 8th and 9th centuries. By 1086 Hitchin is described as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, with the feudal services of Avera and Inward, usually found in the eastern counties, particularly Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, were due from the sokemen, but the manor of Hitchin was rather unique in levying Inward.

Some evidence has been found to suggest that Hitchin was once provided with an earthen bank and ditch fortification, probably in the early tenth century but this did not last. The modern spelling of Hitchin first appears in 1618 in the Hertfordshire Feet of Fines.
