The history of Letchworth Garden City

The Letchworth name is taken from one of the three villages that the town surrounded, the other two being Willian and Norton and all featured in the Domesday Book. The land that is now Letchworth was originally purchased by a religious order of Quakers who had intended to farm the area and build a Quaker community there. Letchworth was laid out by Raymond Unwin as a demonstration of the planning principles established by Ebenezer Howard who wanted to create an alternative to the industrial city by combining the best of both town and country living as a single experience. Letchworth is also home to the United Kingdoms first roundabout, that was built in 1909.

Letchworth was one of the worlds first new towns aswell as being the first garden city. Letchworth itself had a huge influence on future town planning not just in England, but around the world. The Letchworth design and planning influenced Welwyn Garden City at home and Canberra, the Australian capital, Hellerau in Germany, the village of Tapanila in Finland, and Mezaparks situated in Latvia.

There is an apparent link between Letchworth Garden City and town planning in the Soviet Union town of Stalingrad, now called Volgograd. There is an account of Lenin visiting Letchworth when he visited England for a congress of the Russian Bolshevik party which was banned at that time in Russia.
